Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, so the way the body consumes energy is affected. Hypothyroidism, unlike hyperthyroidism, represents the inability of the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones.

Symptoms associated with hypothyroidism are fatigue, depression, muscle or joint pain, dry hair and skin, weight gain, muscle cramps, sensitivity to cold, constipation or bradycardia (slow pulse).
